Things to Know About Sapanca Lake
Sapanca Lake is located within the borders of Sakarya in the Marmara province. However, after many years, Sapanca Lake separated from the sea and became a fresh water lake in its own right.
Sapanca Lake, formerly known as Lake Ayan, was formed by the effect of the underlying fault line.
The 16-kilometer-long lake spreads over an area of 42 square kilometers. Although the deepest point of Sapanca Lake is 61 meters, its average depth is around 30 meters.
It is mostly fed from the springs of the Samanlı Mountain located in the south of the lake. The most important of these sources are as follows; Derbent Stream, EÅŸme Stream, Aygır Stream, Maden Stream, Keçi Stream, Arifiye Stream, Istanbul Stream and Yanık Stream. When the lake exceeds its volume, the excess water flows into the Sakarya River on the east side.
Nearly 80 bird species live in Lake Sapanca, which is a frequent destination for local and foreign tourists throughout the year. It is less polluted than other lakes because it feeds on many sources. However, there may still be pollution in some places.
According to the measurements, the lake water temperature rises in winter and spring, while it decreases in summer. The height difference of the water also varies from season to season. The difference, which is sometimes 80 centimeters, can go up to 150 centimeters at times.
The most important bird species, which are considered to be the natural habitat of Sapanca Lake, are the elmabash patka and the Hungarian duck. In addition, the coot is the most common bird species in the lake. Since the coot hunts in groups, disproportionate growth is observed in the plants on Sapanca Lake. The most common fish species in the lake are carp, pike and catfish.

The Legend of Sapanca Lake
As you know, legends circulate about special places, people or events in the world. One of these legends takes place in Sapanca Lake.
Once upon a time there was a town in the area where modern Sapanca Lake is located. Extremely rich people lived in this town, who were fond of world goods. One day, a poor but good man came down from a mountain near the town. Although he expected the locals to host him, no townsperson took the poor man into his home. The man, whose request for even a bowl of water was rejected, went up to a hut while he was preparing to leave the town hungry and thirsty.
This club belonged to a slinger who made a living by selling slingshot to people living in the town. As soon as the slinger saw the poor man, a smile settled on his face and invited him inside. The man, who did not refuse the host's food and water, was a guest at night. When they woke up in the morning, the slinger took the poor man to the mountains. When the Slinger came back, there was no hut or only a lake in the town. A natural disaster drowned the whole town, flooding it.
Today, when you go to Sapanca Lake, you can see a minaret in the middle of the lake. Indeed, a town was flooded while Sapanca Lake was being formed. For this reason, there are still structures under the lake. Of course, the story told is a legend.
